Greenfields was commissioned to deliver a commercial ground-source heat pump installation at Manchester Metropolitan University’s John Dalton Building, supporting the university’s commitment to improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

The project involved installing three commercial ground-source heat pumps connected to a borehole system, allowing the building to harness renewable ground-source heat to provide heating and cooling year-round.

Large buildings, such as university campuses, require carefully designed heating and cooling systems that operate efficiently at scale.

  • Three commercial ground source heat pumps
  • Multiple boreholes to extract heat from an underground aquifer
  • Integrated mechanical plant system connecting the heat pumps to the building’s heating and cooling infrastructure

The borehole system harnesses the naturally stable ground temperature, allowing the heat pumps to deliver consistent performance throughout the year.

This setup enables the building to benefit from efficient renewable heating in winter and cooling in warmer periods, reducing reliance on conventional energy systems.
